From Winter hair to Spring hairstyles

Though December snow is on the ground in many parts of the country, women are looking forward to the upcoming spring with dreams of sunshine and flowers. With spring comes cleaning–your house, your car, and for some women, your wardrobe and your hair. If spring is when you head to the salon for a new hair style, these hot spring hair styling trends can clue you in to this season’s must-have looks.

Lighten Up

My dark brown hair gets a bit neglected during the winter, and the first sign of spring sends me running to the salon for highlights. Ease in to highlighting gradually, especially if you’ve gone dark over the winter. If you have dark brown hair like I do, for example, start with highlights of red and lighter brown. When you head back to the salon 6-8 weeks later, add in lighter browns and a few dark blonds. Keep it up, and by the time summer rolls in your hair will be light and sunny, just like the weather!

Straighten Up

My hair tends to spend much of the winter up and out of my way. Ponytails, hats, earmuffs, and hoods tend to deflate my spirits when it comes to taking time to do my hair. Spring means warmer weather, and with that, more opportunities to style your hair and have it stay put for showing off. Consider investing in a straightener and straightening your hair one or two mornings a week. A good straightening job can last for a few days, and can help control hair that’s been mistreated during the winter months. Be sure to invest in decent products for straightening your hair, such as Bed Head’s Control Freak product line. They’ll help the hair get straight, and some can protect your hair from damage, too.

Layer Up

If straightening isn’t your thing, consider heading into spring with a brand new set of all-over layers. Done correctly by a skilled stylist, layers can highlight your natural beauty, the shape of your face, and can even give you the appearance of losing weight, when done right. If these things sound appealing to you, layering might be the perfect spring hair styling trend for you.

Shorten Up

According to my chats with hairdressers at Via del Leerbe, one of the top spring trends for 2014 was to take the plunge and shorten your hair. In fact, this continues to be a popular choice for spring and summer, regardless of the year. Shorter hair means less fuss, and when the weather’s nicer, the last thing you want to do is spend hours blow-drying and styling. Rather than go with long and luscious locks, shorten your hair this spring, instead.
